Basic kitesurfing techniques

Thursday, August 31st, 2006

One of the most important kitesurfing techniques is mastering the dead-man safety release system. This system and kitesurfing techniques associated with it are extremely important to you, especially if you are just starting to learn the kitesurfing sport. Carefully study the manufacturers description of how your dead-man safety release system works and operates. Another one of the kitesurfing techniques is practicing with your control system. You will need to practice operating the kite with only your left and / or right hand holding the control pole.

Another one of the important kitesurfing techniques is learning to be in command of the power of your kite. You will need to learn to manage the expected surface of your kite and its flying speed rate. Practice flying the kite and trying to de-power it several times by drawing and / or letting the frontage lines loose. This will allow you to alter the angle and to adjust the expected surface. You will also need to practice the kitesurfing techniques of controlling the flying speed to be able to boost or reduce the power of the kite.

The main one of the kitesurfing techniques that allow you to control the flying speed of your kite is to learn to operate your kite’s brake lines. Using brake lines (pulling in the brake lines) will help you to significantly reduce the speed of your kite. Practice using the brake lines until you feel completely in control and comfortable using them.]]>

Basics Of Golf Swing Instruction…Go With Exercises

Wednesday, August 30th, 2006

There are actually three segments to the golf swing. The segments are the backswing, the downswing and finally the impact and follow through.

Dividing the swing into these 3 segments helps to apply every individual golf swing instruction or tip to the particular segments where they apply. It also helps the golfer focus on one segment at a time in their golf swing instruction making it easier for them to remember what they learn and also to be able to work on improving their game systematically.

There is another bigger advantage to this approach. And that is the ability to be able to draw ones attention to the many different parts of the body and the many muscles involved in a proper golf swing. This is important in helping a golfer involved in a golf exercise program to be able to appreciate the different exercises they do in the program and what particular muscles the exercises focus on.

All this makes it a lot easier for any golfer to link their exercises to golf swing instructions they receive as they seek to improve on their game.

Actually it is not possible to divorce the basics of golf swing instruction from golf specific exercises. The two go together and chances of improving your game improve dramatically when you combine the two. On the other hand progress is bound to be much slower when you work on golf swing instruction only.]]>

Bass Fishing for fun

Tuesday, August 29th, 2006

Bass fishing in the USA is a great combination of sports, adventure and recreation. Bass fishing ,means pursuing black bass, a type of fish. Bass fishing has caught the fancy of Americans. You will find morning shows on TV about bass fishing. You will find thousands of websites exclusively on bass fishing. Bass fish is not about catching and eating. It is about catching and releasing.

Bass fishing is a great sports which doesn’t need the skills possessed by a football athlete or the resilience of an acrobat. You need to be obsessed with the ‘catch’. Hours of practicing can elevate you to the level of being called a pro. Bass fishing is about catching various species of bass - large mouth bass, small mouth bass, Kentucky bass, spotted boss, etc.
Experts opine that the beginners should start bass fishing in smaller ponds. They should avoid large lakes for this purpose. Once you have gained enough confidence, then only move to deeper areas in lakes. Bass fish loves to play hide and seek. Their natural habitat is behind rocks or plants or any such structures in the water body. Look for bass in such places. It is not necessary that the fish will be around large structures only. In fact, you have an equal probability of finding fish near a smaller structure.

Bass fish have a great vision - they can easily see in the night as well. Their see and feel organs work simultaneously. Bass fish are also supposed to have taste buds outside their mouths and inside too. This can help them avoid any unwanted situation. These characteristics make bass fishing such an exciting sports activity and a great pastime for people in leisure time.

One needs a set of equipment for bass fishing. This includes a pole, reel, hook and baits. Baits are available in many varieties chiefly, jigs, crank bait, spinner bait and plastic worms. It is recommended to beginners to start with crank baits and then advance themselves through spinner baits to plastic worms. Plastic worms need the most skills and practice. While Crank baits are suitable for beginners, it is the spinner baits which are popular among experienced anglers and seasoned fishermen.

There are many tournaments of bass fishing. Premier among these are American Bass Anglers Fishing Tournament, Superbass tournament, etc. Enthusiasts from all over the country take part in the tournaments. Bass fishing brings so much excitement today that it has become the most valuable freshwater sports industry.

Becoming an Ageless Golfer

Monday, August 28th, 2006

Probably the biggest thing that we all dislike when we creep into our thirties and forties is the extra poundage (i.e. weight) we tend to put on. (It is also a lot harder to take off when we get older.) Unfortunately, because our metabolism slows down, we are unable to pound down a burger, fries, and a couple of cokes without the bathroom scale hitting “tilt” a few days later. In my mind, that probably is the most difficult adjustment we have to make: an adjustment in our nutrition intake as we age.

The second most noticeable difference as we age, especially for the more active individual, is it becomes a little more difficult to get out of bed. The back is a little sore, the knees are a little creaky, and, if you workout, the soreness does not go away as quickly. This is a result of a few things that happen to our bodies when we get older. Number one is we lose a percentage of our muscle mass on a yearly basis. After the age of 25 (don’t quote me on the specifics, but I believe) about 1% of your muscle mass is lost per year. Makes sense now why we get a little sorer and getting out of bed is more difficult. We simply do not have as much muscle to do the work.

I could go on and on with the depressing facts of aging, but let us look at just one more before moving on. As you get older you become less flexible. It takes you a lot longer to “limber up” for any sporting activity: golf, tennis, or a pick up game of basketball. Less flexibility predisposes you to experience more difficulty with certain movements: touching your toes, rotating during a golf swing, or even reaching down to pick something up off the ground. Why does this occur? Our bodies, as a result of wear and tear, become more “tight” and “wound up” as we get older.

So there you have it! Some of the great things to look forward to as you get older (kidding of course). So if you’re in your twenties and you’re reading this article, “enjoy it while it lasts,” because the road gets a little more difficult to travel as you get older. But, if you’re beyond your twenties, I am sure you can relate to the general results of aging in relation to your golf game. Quite simply, extra pounds decrease your stamina (and may affect your swing plane). Less muscle equals less distance off the tee, and decreased flexibility tends to make the turn in the golf swing much harder to perform. An unfortunate situation, but the good news is that we can slow down the aging process and limit the effects of aging on your golf game.

Slowing Down the Aging Process for the Golf Swing

I have given you a little “carrot of information” that we can slow down the aging process. How do we do it? It is actually quite simple and only requires a little time out of each day (15-20 minutes) and a little discipline. Sounds pretty easy when you think of all the benefits you stand to gain. What we are going to do is provide you some answers on how to slow down the aging process. Remember we can’t stop the aging process, but we can sure slow it down. The benefits of slowing down the aging process are evident when you see guys in their 50’s winning tour events. It just takes a little time, some knowledge, and discipline. If you are saying, “I don’t have the time,” let me ask you one question: How would you like to feel 10 years younger right now and hit the ball farther then you did in your twenties? I imagine the answer to both of those questions would be a resounding yes!

Let us start with the first topic that we described when you get older, the additional pounds. Unfortunately, as you age your metabolism slows down. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the word metabolism, think of it as your own internal furnace. It is the rate at which you burn fuel (food is fuel to the human body). When we are younger we tend have faster metabolisms, and as we get older they slow down. (I know it is a bummer.) Well, let me tell you, there are activities to speed that metabolism back up. The way to do it is by performing some fitness activities. If you are active and participate in some type of structured activity your body will burn more fuel and elevate its metabolism during this time. In addition, if these activities are resistance-training activities (i.e. weights, tubing, light dumbbells, body weight), then over time you will build some muscle. The great thing about that is the more muscle you have the higher your metabolism will be all the time (translation: you will burn more fuel all day and night). A secondary benefit of such activities will be greater stamina on the course. So rather than “spraying your shots” around on the back nine because you’re tired, you can have pinpoint accuracy going into the 18th.

Moving on to our second point, the loss of muscle mass as you age, this one is a tough one to swallow. Just think, we actually LOSE muscle as we age. Pretty depressing. The good news is it can be limited or stopped. Before I give you the solution, let’s look at how this affects your golf swing. Essentially, in the golf swing you create club head speed. That club head speed is the result of creating rotational power, which we define as torque. To create torque, the muscles of the body have to be flexible, strong, and powerful. Now guess what? If you have less muscle, what do you think is going to happen to your power outputs and club head speed? The answer is they will decrease. No wonder they make senior shafts with a lot of flex. This is the golf manufacturers’ attempt to deal with this problem. It helps to a point, but we have a better solution. How about putting something in your bag that makes you stronger, improves your power, and gets back that lost distance? Sounds good? Well, it can be done if you implement a golf-specific strength-training program. You can get back that lost muscle mass, get back that power, and improve your driving distance. This is what we call the development of “golf strength,” and it can be done with a program that takes a total of 15 minutes a day!

Finally, moving on to the flexibility issue, our bodies lose flexibility as we age. Flexibility is a must when it comes to the golf swing. Here is what happens when you do not “work” on your flexibility. A loss of flexibility in the golf swing limits the ability of the body to perform the correct actions to create the proper swing. Essentially, your body won’t allow you to take the club back and through on the correct swing path. This leads to miss hits, slices, hooks, and a whole bunch of other shots that are very unpleasant. So how do we fix this problem or not allow it to become a problem? The answer is to implement a golf-specific flexibility program. This again requires a daily commitment, but the time frame is very little (say 5 minutes a day). So again, ask yourself: Is it worth spending 5 minutes a day on flexibility to have the golf swing you would like? I bet most of you would answer yes.

The Magic Pill

Well, there you have the pleasures, displeasure, joys, and sorrows of the aging process. We all get older, but there are things we can do to prevent the displeasures and sorrows. If we take a little time every day and perform the proper exercises and activities, we can reduce the effects of aging and have a great swing for as long as we like. That’s the only magic pill we know of. If you would like more information on this subject and how to go about improving your golf fitness, take a look at our web site at www.bioforcegolf.com.]]>

Beginners Guide to Buying a Set of Golf Clubs

Sunday, August 27th, 2006

First, you need to know what makes up a set of clubs? Well there are four main parts to a set of clubs: Woods, Irons, Wedges, and a Putter. These days you also have the Hybrid Clubs. These are a cross between irons and woods. People who have trouble hitting their long irons, such as a 2 or 3 iron, tend to use these types of clubs instead. You are allowed up to 14 clubs in your bag and they can be in just about any combination you want. For example, in my bag I carry a Driver, a 4 wood, 3 thru 9 irons, pitching wedge, gap wedge, sand wedge, lob wedge and a putter. This arrangement of clubs fits my game and the types of courses I usually play.

Next, what options are out there when buying a set of golf clubs? To start out with you can buy new or used. Used can be a money saver over new, but can also come with some inherent problems, such as, worn grips, cracked shafts and other problems. When you are buying a first set, these are not things you want to deal with. So, I would recommend going the new route.

Now that you have decided on purchasing new clubs, the next option is buying a complete set or putting one together. Putting a set together yourself will be the more expensive option over buying a complete set. Also, getting a complete set takes much of the hassle and intimidation out of the decision making process.

As a beginner, you should buy a complete starter set. This will usually include a Driver, 3 wood, 5 wood, 3 thru 9 irons, a pitching wedge and a putter. Some may even include a sand wedge and a golf bag. This is only 11 or 12 clubs you say! What else should I get? Don’t worry about this now. As you improve then you can think about adding another wedge, a 2 iron or a hybrid of some sort. Until then you are just wasting your money. You would be better off spending your coin on some lessons and improving your swing. Remember, expensive clubs won’t help you play any better. Why spend $300.00 on a Driver when you can spend less than that and get everything you need to play except golf balls in one package. A complete set is a great way to save some money in the beginning, since you’re going to be spending enough cash replacing a lot of those lost golf balls.]]>

Birthday gift ideas

Saturday, August 26th, 2006

# It is always better to give personal items as birthday gifts rather than decorative pieces and kitchen appliances. There is nothing wrong with them per se. It is just that kitchenware and wall hangings can be gifted on so many other occasions like wedding anniversaries, Christmas and New Year.
# Personalized items are a rage today. What is so special about it is that any item that you would like to gift can be personalized. Right from pillows to golf balls, you can get them branded with the name of the person whom you want to give the gift. You can also personalize gift-wrappings and boxes.
# Gift baskets make good birthday gifts. Mainly because a gift basket can be an assortment of a number of items. Readymade gift baskets are available in plenty. However, you can make your very own basket and pile in all the items of your as well as their liking.
# Greeting cards and flowers can accompany your gift to make it all the more special. They can’t be deemed as gifts. They are primarily used to greet or wish a person well.
# Gifts for her can include jewelry and jewelry boxes, perfumes, scented candles, bags of all shapes and textures, soft toys (especially cuddly teddy bears), wristwatch, make-up kit, cosmetics and evening wear.
# Gifts for him can include electronic goods, sporting goods, musical instruments apart from clothing, wristwatch and perfume.
# Children can be given chocolate boxes, candy bar packets, game sets and CDs and all kinds of sporting goods, toys and clothing.
# Books are perfect gift birthday gifts for people of all ages. However, they should be selected keeping in mind the age and preference of the person concerned.
# To stand out, make sure your gift is wrapped in a classy yet attractive manner.
# Make sure the gifts items you select for babies do not have any sharp edges.]]>

Black Bear Chasing Kid Style

Black Bear Chase

Peddling as fast as my aching legs could move, I came to an abrupt stop. My shocked eyes followed the big black bear as it veered off the old brush road into the dark forest, just a few feet in front of me.

Camping With My Friends

It was early summer. A couple of friends of mine and myself had just finished a week end camping and fishing trip at one of our favorite lakes in the area, where we lived.

As I can remember it was a very long bike ride, even for three 14 year old boys.

Bear Country

The road we took to get there and back hadn’t seen any traffic for a few years. It was a good bet we would run into something back there.

Sure enough I did, my buddies missed out on all the excitement, they had trailed behind and missed out.

Spring Bear Hunt

Since that time I’ve seen many a black bear in the Ontario Northland of Canada.

With the cancellation of the annual spring black bear hunt, I expect to see many more of these magnificent animals.

Black Bear Population

For the tourists, this is good and bad news, for the Northern Ontario resident, just bad. Ontario has a growing black bear population that is one of the largest in the world.

Bears In Politics

The spring black bear hunt was cancelled in 1999 in a pre-election move. The thought was that the government’s decision would reduce the number of orphaned cubs.

The number of orphaned cubs in shelters rose.

Happy Tourists

Residents now have to put up with nuisance bears. Too many for their liking. The tourists have good news because they will get a better chance at seeing one.

Bad, because campers will need to keep a keen eye for nuisance bears. Now nuisance bear complaints are the norm.

Bear Control

Some municipalities have now hired bear-control officers, but many municipalities cannot afford this.

Without trained staff, municipalities must rely on law enforcement officers, with no background in bear management, to respond to nuisance bear complaints.

One day the Ontario government will come to their senses and bring back the spring Black Bear hunt again.

The Bear Facts

The black bear is also seen in other colour phases, chocolate and cinnamon brown are also common.

Black bears can reach weights of up to 700 lbs.

Black bears roam a very large area even as much as 500 square miles.

Black bears have been know to run as fast as a horse.

A bear can bite through a tree as big around as a person’s arm.

Litter size may range from one to five cubs, but two is average.

Male black bears regularly kill and eat bear cubs in the spring; biologists say as many as 50% of bear cubs lose their lives this way each year.

Life span in the wild is 20 to 25 years. Mother black bears have not been known to attack in defence of its cubs.

A large number of fatal bear attacks in Ontario have occurred in areas not open to hunting.

As a tourist, I enjoy the site of seeing one of nature’s rare sights. As a resident, black bears are seen, heard and feared all too often.

The black bears future depends on how well Ontario Northland residents understand manage and tolerate them.]]>

Black Belts And Good Wine

Thursday, August 24th, 2006

I was looking at the colour of the wine in the glass and appreciating the different aromas of it.

I realized that black belts instructors are much like wine and most students are like the common guy who takes a glass of wine now and then.

In my opinion a first dan (shodan) is the same as a young wine, from a very recent year without time to mature in old oak barrels. It’s flavour is nice, light and easy to drink. It is a good wine to start with when you don’t have a clue about wines. It will not give you a headache and a limited number of glasses won’t make you drunk.

The same thing goes for the 1st dan instructor. It’s a good technical instructor, easy to learn from and a great start when you take up your martial arts study.

This instructor will need time in the old oak barrels to mature but he will as his training continues and he keeps going on the path that leads to master ship. The only thing that could get in his way is his own ego. The moment he thinks he is a great wine; he stops learning and steps out of the oak barrel. A good instructor as well as a great wine needs time, lots of time and patience.

As instructors we first of all need to be like an outstanding grape, ready to be moulded into a fine wine. Next we will need an outstanding dojo with a great sensei who can turn us in a young wine , but this instructor has to have the expertise of the master wine maker to take us to the level of a GRAN RESERVA. To accomplish this he needs us to give all we have and more. Not only 95f our dedication is needed but 105אOnly this way he can get all the flavours out of the wine.

But you must remember that time is needed. You can take the best machines, the best grapes and the best wine maker, if the young wine doesn’t want to go into the barrels they will never become a GRAN RESERVA.

Spanish wine comes in different classifications. We have the young wine which is classified as DENOMINACI׃N DE ORIGEN which guaranties it’s origin, one level up is the CRIANZA, a wine that already has had some time in the barrel, a RESERVA which is a “master level wine” and finally a GRAN RESERVA which is top of the bill.

But there is also the side of the customer, the average guy or girl who goes to the supermarket to buy themselves a bottle of wine to enjoy in a meal with their wife or husband. They can off course buy a RESERVA or GRAN RESERVA and pay a lot of money for one bottle but I ask myself, if they don’t have experience in drinking wine, will they be able to appreciate this wine to the fullest? Will they be able to notice the different notes and flavours hidden inside? I don’t think so. In my opinion they should get themselves a nice young wine or maybe a crianza and start with this. It will be a nice wine, low cost and easy to drink without headaches afterwards. After having acquired enough experience with the younger wines they may start trying the RESERVAS and when specialist in wine drinking (drunks ???) only then they will appreciate the GRAN RESERVA to the fullest.

How can we know as a starting budo practitioner if the wine (instructor) we are going to have is any good? As with wine there is a label that guaranties quality. It’s called lineage. Ask your instructor about his lineage. Who is his teacher? Who is the teacher of his teacher? How long does his art exist? Who are his colleagues, his co-instructors? Only when he can demonstrate his lineage, reputation and the authenticity of his martial art we will have a guaranty of it’s quality.

He will be accredited by his teacher’s reputation and by the fact he still is actively training. A teacher who stopped training is like a branch fallen of a tree. It will slowly become a dead branch.

Unfortunately, many people think that they are real wine specialists after having some young wines and therefore can pass judgement on the quality of RESERVAS and GRAN RESERVAS. How more wrong can they be?

First find the wine guaranty, next start trying the young wines and CRIANZA and finally when you are ready you can enjoy the RESERVA and GRAN RESERVA.]]>

Blues Harmonica

Wednesday, August 23rd, 2006

The blues harp possibly reached it’s highest level of perfection with Little Walter, know to the Bureau of Statistics as Marion Walter Jacobs.

The harmonica goes back to an invention by the Chinese empress Nyn-Kwa, a reed instrument known as the Sheng (meaning sublime voice). This was about 3,000 BCE, so there probably wasn’t much blues jamming going on around the palace. The more modern version came from the work of Christian Friedrich Ludwig Bushmann in 1821. Bushmann was a 16 year old clockmaker in Germany who lashed together 15 separate pitch pipes and called it a “mund-eaoline” which means “mouth harp.”

The harp loved by classic blues players, the Marine Band, came along in 1896 and could be yours for a mere fifty cents.

The move into blues for the harp happened over a period of time and there are various theories and “firsts” to contend with. Owing to the instrument’s ability to sound like a train gave it a place in early pieces such as Railroad Piece by Palmer Bailey or Railroad Blues by Freeman Stowers. According to some, the “mama” sound the harmonica makes put it in several songs, along with its ability to sound like yelping dogs (especially the way some play it), a natural for blues about prisons and escapes.

Maybe the first real blues-blues comes from Jaybird Coleman who recorded between 1927 and 1930. The songs were very much in the blues vein and, as a strange aside, it is said that Jaybird Coleman was managed by the Ku Klux Klan in 1929.]]>

Bookmaking basics

Tuesday, August 22nd, 2006

The bookie can take bets on any professional events – election, races, college sports.
Bookmaking has been prohibited been prohibited in the past. Even now it is illegal in certain states. Its legal status being in controversy, the job is considered a shady one.

In Europe, licenses were required in the past by those who wished to bet or involve themselves in bookmaking. Now, the event is illegal and betting on the election results is quite popular in Europe. Almost all sports event attract wagers in the State, especially soccer.

In USA, bookmaking is illegal in almost all the states. The only exception is the gambling hub, Nevada. However, illegal betting exists, giving the bookmakers a profitable business. The common betting events include sports. Bookmaking in Canada is state owned and operated. Bookmaking is a part of country’s lottery program- sport select.

Sports remain the evergreen area for betting and bookmaking. The bettors are usually young or middle aged people. Sports being an year round activity which is mostly unpredictable attracts a lot of bookmakers who are keen on making quick money.

A less likely, but extremely popular betting event is elections. Political election being a nation wide phenomenon attracts a lot of bets. Even papal elections have not been spared by this game of luck. As the authority of the office involved in the election increases, the number and the amount of wagers also show an increase.

Horseracing is one of the most popular wagering event. The fact that makes this event so popular among the bettors is its randomness. Even the most consistent of the winners stands a chance to loose the race. Other races like grey hound races also attract wagers.
These are a few conventional areas popular for betting. But bookmaking can be involved in almost any event that lacks certainty. For example, bets can also be placed on whether it will snow on the Christmas day!

The bookie stands to profit by balancing the book i.e. making sure that he has equal number of bets for all eventualities, so that he does not run out of money. A threat to the bookmaker’s business is betting exchanges. These are one to one bets where the persons choose to forgo the bookie while making bets. Few betting exchanges sites have also cropped up, which enable this affair while charging a commission out of the bet.

Betting, like any other job, is not devoid of corruption. Some bookmakers can invite bets and later siphon away the entire money. This is usually the case when one involves in illegal betting. The principle of caveat emptor is forcefully applicable here.

Bookmaking is a competitive industry, with everyone willing to make fast money. However, it does involve a certain amount of skill to balance the book and earn the maximum profit out of the entire event. In countries where bookmaking is banned, people resort to online bets which are equally simple and profitable. For those who involve in illegal betting, it is advisable not to indulge in it as a small mistake can land one in deep soup.]]>
